Top Things to Know: 2011 Performance Measures for Adults With Coronary Artery Disease and Hypertension

Published: June 13, 2011

  1. Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality for men and women in the United States.
  2. Performance Measures are those metrics that the committee designates as appropriate for use for both quality improvement and external reporting as opposed to quality measures (or metrics), which are intended for quality improvement purposes only.
  3. These Performance Measures were jointly developed by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology Foundation with the American Medical Association’s Physician Consortium for Physician Improvement.
  4. This manuscript identifies particular challenges in creating performance measures: medication use, prescription alone versus optimal dosing, medication adherence and outcome measures.
  5. This set is an update to the 2005 ACCF/AHA Performance Measures for CAD/HTN and includes modifications to 7 of the 2005 measures.
  6. Screening for diabetes mellitus was retired from the CAD set published in 2005.
  7. Symptom Management and Cardiac Rehabilitation referral were added to the 2011 CAD set.
  8. This includes a total of 9 Performance Measures for Coronary Artery Disease and 1 measure for Hypertension.
  9. All 10 measures are considered treatment-based metrics within the Dimensions of Care Measures matrix (see Table 4).
  10. These Performance Measures will be submitted to the National Quality Forum (NQF) for consideration for endorsement and subsequent use in public reporting/reimbursement programs, including government payment reform programs.
